RANDFONTEIN – Gauteng Premier David Makhura kicked off his State of the Province Address (SOPA) on Monday by saying he would never have approved the transfer of mentally ill patients from the Life Esidimeni private healthcare facility to NGOs that were unregistered.
Makhura said representatives from families of the more than 100 deceased patients were in the audience at Greenhills stadium, in Randfontein where he delivered his speech.
Earlier, Gauteng Speaker Ntombi Mekgwe stopped the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from bringing a motion regardomg the Esidimini saga, saying the party had not given enough notice for this.
The Democratic Alliance caucus held up small flags, to remember those who died.
When Makhura took to the podium he apologized to the families of the victims and said his executive never approved the decision to move the patients.
Makhura also promised to help the families going forward.
Meanwhile, a small group of EFF supporters were marching around the Greenhills stadium earlier, trying to gain entry.
Police stopped them from going inside.
